Evangelization

Pastoral Mission of the Syro-Malabar Church in Europe

evangelization

Evangelization within the Apostolic Visitation for the Syro-Malabar faithful in Europe is deeply connected with the lived reality of migration. A significant number of Syro-Malabar faithful have moved to Europe for education, employment, and a secure future, forming communities spread across many countries and cultures.

In this context, evangelization primarily means preserving and nurturing the faith of the migrant faithful and ensuring continuity of Syro-Malabar ecclesial identity among present and future generations. The Apostolic Visitation exists to respond to this pastoral and evangelizing responsibility.

Evangelization: Vision & Mission

Vision

To build vibrant Syro-Malabar Christian communities in Europe that remain rooted in their ecclesial heritage, grow in faith through pastoral accompaniment, and bear Christian witness within European societies.

Mission

  • Ensure continuous pastoral care for Syro-Malabar migrant faithful across Europe
  • Strengthen Catholic faith and Syro-Malabar identity in migrant families
  • Support evangelization through liturgy, catechesis, prayer, and community life
  • Accompany children, youth, and young adults in faith formation

Syro-Malabar Understanding of Evangelization

For the Syro-Malabar faithful in Europe, evangelization is inseparable from pastoral care, liturgy, catechesis, and community life. It is realized through the celebration of faith, the sacramental life, and Christian witness in multicultural societies—renewing our communities and strengthening the faith of future generations.

Core Areas of Evangelization

A. Evangelization through Pastoral Care

  • Regular pastoral visits to communities and mass centres
  • Faith renewal programs, retreats, and recollections
  • Sacramental life as the foundation of evangelization
  • Personal accompaniment of families and individuals

B. Evangelization in Migrant Families

Migrant families are the first and most important place of evangelization. The Apostolic Visitation encourages families to live the faith at home and participate actively in community worship and formation.

  • Supporting parents in transmitting faith to children
  • Encouraging family prayer and participation in Holy Qurbana
  • Strengthening Christian values amid cultural and social challenges

C. Evangelization among Children and Youth

Children and youth of migrant families face unique challenges in preserving faith and identity. Evangelization includes accompaniment, formation, belonging, and leadership development.

  • Youth faith formation and leadership initiatives
  • Integration with catechism and youth ministries
  • Vocation awareness and discernment
  • Creating a sense of belonging within the Church

D. Community-Based Evangelization

  • Prayer groups and fellowships
  • Small Christian communities and associations
  • Hospitality towards newcomers and newly arrived families
  • Building unity among faithful from different regions and backgrounds

E. Evangelization and Mission Awareness

  • Promoting missionary consciousness within Europe and beyond
  • Observing Mission Sunday and related initiatives
  • Encouraging charitable outreach in collaboration with Caritas and other ministries
  • Forming children and youth in missionary responsibility

Evangelization in the European Context

At the same time, it preserves the distinct ecclesial, liturgical, and spiritual patrimony entrusted to the Apostolic Visitation.

Organization and Coordination

Evangelization within the Apostolic Visitation is carried out through the guidance of the Apostolic Visitator, coordination at national and regional levels, the active involvement of priests, religious, and committed lay faithful, and collaboration with Catechism, Liturgy, Family Apostolate, Bible Apostolate, and Caritas.
